CHANTICLEER A review in The Boston Globe described Chanticleer’s singing as “…breathtaking in its accuracy of intonation, purity of blend, variety of color and swagger of style”. This Grammy award-winning, a capella ensemble of twelve male voices, takes us on a trip through the world of American music. We are transported from seventeenth century Mexican polyphony, through eighteenth and nineteenth century church music to the varied compositions of the twentieth century. A selection of jazz, folk and gospel features traditional American folk songs, music by Gershwin, Ruby and Coates and new arrangements of African American music. Performance City Hall Theatre

28th January 2003 The journey across Bolivia, in search of a mystery cave rumoured to hold the last of the cosmic secrets, introduces us to illegal loggers, Brazilian dancers, drug enforcement agents, lawless cities, seedy bars and jungle night-clubs. It is an odyssey that finally leads to a lost world in the shadow of Cerro Amboro, the sacred mountain, shrouded in mist and myth. 29th January 2003 Peter Searles takes us through some of the more gruelling parts of his South American travels as he passes through Chile, encountering fascist police, Marxist priests and a beautiful young revolutionary, along the way. A journey through shanty towns and smog-laden cities to a world of forests, lakes and volcanoes, which turns into a quest for truth and meaning in a land torn apart by years of military dictatorship. ARTURO SANDOVAL Celebrated Cuban trumpet player Arturo Sandoval sets Bermuda alight with his gravity-defying riffs and piercing high notes. Accompanied by his band, this multi Grammy award-winner displays his wide-ranging virtuosity in a broad programme, injected with humour, spontaneity and high spirits, that promise to raise the roof. Jane McCulloch’s popular English Chamber Theatre returns to the Festival with a cameo production, celebrating the life of Rupert Brooke, in poetry, prose and music. In his short life, Brooke, best known for his poem Grantchester and for his War Sonnets, captured the imagination of a whole generation. His story is told through the eyes of a woman who knew him from his early days at Rugby , to the heady days at Cambridge , his fated love affair with Katharine (Ka) Cox, and through his war experiences, cut short by his untimely death, on his way to the Dardanelles , in 1915. TROMBONES DE COSTA RICA The musicianship and flawless technique of these young artists is certain to blow you away! The talented ensemble, from Costa Rica, comprises four trombones and percussion, and presents a varied programme ranging from Bach and Bernstein to Lloyd Webber and Costa Rican composers. The programme features the world premiere of a piece specially commissioned for the Ensemble’s performance at the Bemruda Festival, and a highlight of each performance is a guest appearance by Bermuda ’s renowned tuba player, Kenneth Amis. SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK This African-American a capella sextet has wowed audiences with its extraordinary harmonies, for almost thirty years, and still its popularity grows! Some of the music of this Grammy award-winning sextet derives from old spirituals, some of the sixties civil rights movement, some touches on gospel and some has its roots in jazz and blues; all of it is sung with passion, commitment and showmanship.
