Woodie King’s National Black Touring Circuit makes a welcome return to the Festival with its new production, Sweet Mama Stringbean, based on the life of Ethel Waters, the legendary star of stage, film and television. Aging and severely overweight, Ethel Waters is faced with a waning career and the prospect of an impoverished old age, when a dream of a childhood spiritual awakening opens her to a new future with the Billy Graham Crusade.

Directed by Elizabeth Van Dyke and choreographed by Mickey Davidson, the show includes powerful renditions of such favourites as Stormy Weather, Just a Closer Walk With Thee and His Eye Is OnThe Sparrow. Previous productions at the Festival from this company have included Marian Anderson – Things of the Heart and Melba Moore: Sweet Songs of the Soul, both of which played to sell-out houses.

Book early to avoid disappointment.
